What are the Symptoms of Muscle Spasms In Arm?

The symptoms and duration of muscle pain or muscle spasms may vary depending on the cause. They can last from a minute to days and sometimes even weeks. Muscle Spasm can be sudden and constant, while at other times, it can even be intermittent. Sudden muscle contractions, pain, swelling, stiffness and in the affected area are the most common symptoms. A bulging muscle may be felt or seen under the skin where the muscle is located. Generally, the sufferer will feel the need to stretch the affected muscle, which can relieve the pain and spasm. This condition should not be left untreated, or it may become permanent.

The signs and symptoms of muscle spasms can be exertion, muscle fatigue or from electrolyte imbalances. In case, if there are numerous muscles involved or if the person experiences loss of sensation in the feet and hands, then it can be more serious and might require immediate medical help. To treat muscle spasms, slowly and gently stretch the affected area and use mild muscle soothing agents like ice therapy, Epsom salt soaks, hot packs and calcium/magnesium supplements. To prevent muscle spasms, make sure your electrolytes are balanced, you are hydrated, you keep your muscles warm and you warm up before your sport.

Consult your doctor and determine the cause of muscle spasm, before going to undergo any treatment. The treatment of muscle spasm also depends upon the underlying cause. MRI or CT scan are the advanced techniques which are used for the diagnosis of the condition. In severe cases of injury, a person may be required to undergo an operation or surgery but it is very rare in the case of arms. Botulinum toxin type A (Botox) may be injected into a specific muscle to paralyze it and relieve the muscle spasm.

In most cases, injections, pain killers medications, acupressure, acupuncture and some natural relaxants like valerian and chamomile are used. If these natural methods do not provide relief, then it is advisable to consult a doctor as soon as possible and get immediate medical attention. Similarly, if twitching or spasm is caused by excessive training during exercise, then rest, stretching, massage, etc. can help in providing relief.
